What is a Montessori School?

Montessori system of education was figured by Maria Montessori in the mid 1900s. She was one of the first female doctors in Italy and she studied children from different socio-economic backgrounds and developed a new system of education. Knowing a few pertinent differences between the two systems of education will help guardians make an informed choice about which preschool they want to enroll their child in.

Montessori is a method that is based on sequential learning. For each individual child the first step of an educational activity is presented first, and then when that is mastered the next is presented and so forth. It is all hands-on, experiential learning.

It is different than the traditional way of learning that most other schools use… and one of those big differences is how they view children.

Montessori views children as naturally in control and able to maneuver through their environment with little help, even handling real glass drinking cups and knives to cut. Whereas the traditional method sees children as naturally out of control which is why the day is set up as it is… broken up into quiet and then large muscle play in order to use up their energy so they can settle down and pay attention.

Montessori education is based on self directed activity, hands on learning, and collaborative play. Montessori education focuses on child-led learning. Students are encouraged to be the directors of their own study, identifying and pursuing projects that interest them, with the teacher serving as a guide to their learning.

Montessori classroom looks much different. There you’ll find students of varying ages all engaged in different activities simultaneously, with the teacher observing, sometimes aiding a child in his or her endeavor
